Region Ten provides outpatient counseling as requested and is available. Typically, we provide counseling in blocks of counseling sessions, referred to as "episodes of care." Each block consists of eight to 10 sessions with very clear and achievable goals.
Each person regularly reviews their progress and need for therapy with his or her clinician. As additional needs develop, new episodes of care may be initiated.
Our approach is empathic, person-centered and flexible. We believe that the therapeutic relationship is one of the most important tools at our disposal in treatment and recovery. We encourage supplementing individual therapy with group work to maintain recovery.
We use well-researched and proven treatment such as stages of change, motivational interviewing and enhancement therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, psycho-education, psychodynamic, family systems, and dialectical behavioral therapies. In addition, we use workbooks and other educational and reinforcing materials.
We encourage active participation in one's own recovery!

Often individuals seeking outpatient counseling have needs other than therapeutic ones. Resource Managers help those receiving services at Fourth Street and the Mohr Center identify those needs and work on their resolution. Without help, the unmet needs can stop a person from succeeding.
When someone is referred for Outpatient Services, he or she identifies barriers that might hinder their treatment success. He or she meets with a Resource Manager who begins working immediately to address these barriers. Additional appointments are scheduled as new needs are identified. Resource managers make themselves available before and after most groups to facilitate "drop-ins."
Typical needs that are addressed are: finding furniture, securing childcare, finding permanent housing, locating temporary shelter, paying back utility bills, obtaining fuel assistance, filing for medication assistance, budgeting, getting dental care, applying for benefits, writing a resume, finding employment, accessing Legal Aid, filing a complaint with a magistrate, filing for custody or visitation, filing for child support, finding transportation, getting voting rights reinstated, accessing inpatient services, getting a birth certificate, ID card, or driver's license, getting out of a violent relationship, getting food, getting into an GED or Adult Ed class, applying for financial assistance at UVa for medical care.

Project Link was established by the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services (DMRMHSAS) in 1990 to address the issues of addicted pregnant women. Region Ten was one of five CSBs in Virginia awarded implementation grants. Project Link provides assertive case management for women who are pregnant or parenting small children and abusing drugs or alcohol. Providing support, treatment, advocacy, and referrals are a significant part of Link's mission.
Women are referred by Access, their current case manager, or group facilitator. Women are assigned to a Project Link clinician who helps them identify barriers to establishing or maintaining a recovery program. Transportation, rental assistance, and help using community resources is offered to all Link participants.

Substance Abuse Diversion & Recovery Support
Substance Abuse Diversion
The substance abuse diversion program prevents whenever possible admissions of consumers with primary substance abuse problems to state psychiatric facilities. SA Diversion ensures that consumers with primary substance use disorders will be served in the least restrictive community setting that can meet their treatment and safety needs. Crisis intervention, assessment, preadmission screening and funding for detoxification and inpatient care is provided. Supportive counseling and basic case management of needs to support the individual in the community setting is also provided.
Recovery Support
Recovery support provides peer support to those with a substance use disorder diagnosis and/or a co-occurring mental health disorder. Support services are provided to people in locations across the Region Ten catchment area: in our various clinics, people’s homes, in other agencies, in the hospitals or in the street. Services are provided by those in recovery. We partner with other service providers to maximize those we can reach.
